“Unclaimed” Yahoo Groups to be blocked on September 30

More than two years ago, Grouply introduced advanced administration features, premium services, and the ability for Yahoo Groups owners to give their groups an “extreme makeover” through Grouply. Grouply relies on some group owners paying for premium services in order to cover the cost of running Grouply. We are now at the point where we are no longer able to support Yahoo Groups without an owner or moderator using Grouply. All such “unclaimed” groups will be automatically blocked from Grouply on September 30, 2011.

If you would like to continue to use Grouply to access any of your unclaimed groups, you should contact the group owner ASAP and ask them to join Grouply. Grouply automatically detects when a group’s moderator joins, and the group will not be blocked.

Affected Grouply users will be notified via email shortly regarding this plan. Thanks for using Grouply!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know which of my Yahoo Groups are unclaimed?

You can see the complete list of unclaimed groups to which you belong on your External Group Access page (Settings > External Group Access), where unclaimed groups are flagged with a red “X” icon and the phrase “To be removed”.

Another way to tell if a group is unclaimed is by viewing its home page in Grouply:

  • The group is unclaimed if the group’s home page shows an About This Site box in the upper left that includes an “Invite the group owner” button.
  • The group is not unclaimed if the home page shows an About This Site box is in the upper right that includes a message in the format “Joe Smith is managing this site on Grouply”.

How do I contact my group owner?

You can email the group owner/moderator at the owner address. The owner address for a Yahoo Group is in the format groupname-owner@yahoogroups.com (e.g., coolgroup-owner@yahoogroups.com). You can see the owner address at the bottom of the group’s home page in Yahoo.

What should I say to the group owner?

Here is a sample email you might send:

Dear coolgroup owner-

I have been using Grouply (www.grouply.com) for some time to read postings from and interact with coolgroup. Grouply is like a “smart” email reader that organizes postings from all of my groups in a way that makes it easy for me to keep up. On September 30, Grouply will automatically block access to coolgroup unless you or another moderator registers with Grouply.

Would you please consider giving Grouply a try? Grouply provides some great features for group owners. If you register, coolgroup would get a customizable website, dozens of useful apps, and charts and graphs you can use to track member activity. To find out more about Grouply features for group owners, check out the Extreme Makeover tour at http://blog.grouply.com/makeover-tour/ .

To register for Grouply, go to http://www.grouply.com/register . When you register, Grouply will automatically detect that you are the moderator of coolgroup.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks very much for your consideration!

-Joe
